Description of Work

The United States Coast Guard (USCG) is acquiring Maritime Security Cutters built in Mississippi. These cutters are delivered to the USCG with limited communication equipment.  Chugach transforms these vessels to National Security Cutters by expanding their communication capabilities.

Unique Challenges

This transformation is nearly a year-long process.  For the two cutters assigned to Hawaii, Chugach overcomes logistical challenges for highly-specialized materials.  Being on an island in the Pacific Ocean limits the availability of the inordinate amount of unique material required to complete the transformation.

Solutions

Chugach plans one full year ahead of the cutter’s arrival.  Heide and Cooke, a Chugach subsidiary, helps identify and develop relationships with local vendors. Chugach learned lessons from other subsidiaries who work in the Pacific region – understanding shipping procedures and organizing shipments to Hawaii.  Chugach identified materials that are available locally and composed a robust list of raw materials for shipment.  Chugach streamlined our shipping processes and minimized shipping costs.
